Causes of Erectile Dysfunction
There are a variety of reasons why a man would be unable to achieve or maintain an erection, but the problem is usually psychological, physical, or a combination of the two.
Psychological Causes
Depression, anxiety, guilt, stress, and worry can contribute to low libido or erectile dysfunction. Experiencing erectile dysfunction can be psychologically and emotionally stressful, and a man may worry that it will happen again. This performance anxiety may cause further problems with sex, so it is important to recognize the cycle. Psychological causes are often secondary to physical causes, so it is important to talk to your doctor as soon as possible.
Physical Causes
There are several underlying conditions typically associated with erectile dysfunction. Through a thorough medical history and examination, your doctor will evaluate you for the following conditions:
- Vascular Disease (arteriosclerosis): Risk factors include high blood pressure and high cholesterol
- Diabetes Mellitus
- Smoking
- Peyronie’s Disease: Curved penis
- Kidney Failure
- Hormone Imbalances
- Drugs (Prescription and Over-the-Counter)
- Neurologic Conditions
- Pelvic Trauma (injury, surgery, or radiation)
- Venous Leak
